Gooseberry Mesa sits above the canyon country southwest of Zion National Park — a high, flat expanse of slickrock where the land drops away and the sky takes over. Most visitors to the Zion area never make it here. That's exactly why David brings his guests.

At golden hour, the canyon walls below ignite. The light moves fast — amber first, then deep rose, then a slow fade through purple and indigo as the stars begin to surface. There is no crowd here, no shuttle, no noise. Just the scale of Southern Utah doing what it does best.

What you'll see

The canyon walls below Gooseberry Mesa face west — which means they catch the last light of the day in a way that few places in Southern Utah can match. As the sun drops, the rock shifts through every shade of gold, orange, and red before the shadows climb and the sky turns.

On clear evenings, the color progression from warm amber to deep purple to near-black happens over the course of about forty minutes. David knows exactly where to stand and when to look. He's watched this sunset more times than he can count — and it still stops him.
